Honeymoon Beach, Caneel Bay Resort, St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, July 7, 2017. I was where I didn’t belong: stealing a minute on the private beach reserved for paying customers. Once the personal domain of the Rockefellers, all guests are now long gone… its future uncertain.
This scene follows the one featured in Episode 37; the camera wasn’t off long between these two moments. By presenting these scenic memories in new order, their meanings grow. The 2017 dockside footage of a lovely sunset was a source of joy and appreciation at the start of March, 2020. Now, anticipating May, my feelings about that July sunset have changed.
Since January 11 of this year, over 200,000 people have lost their lives due to the coronavirus. Even at the beginning of March, we had no idea what to expect. Heading into May, we are still on-edge. Life is altered, fundamentally, moving forward. We are hopeful of more good times to come, but also, swept up in new ways. Focusing on work and family… on being mindful, smart, compassionate, kind, respectful, productive and good. Quietly celebrating life’s generosity – and aiming to be worthy.
I had this private beach all to myself for a minute, several years back. This wondrous place, and so many others, will be there for us. More spectacular days are coming our way.
